THE ORPHAN SINGER

Music by Antonio Vivaldi
Libretto by Barbara Zinn Krieger
Music Direction and Arrangement by Rick Erickson
Adapted from the book written and illustrated
by Emily Arnold McCully

On October 27 & 28, 2005, American Opera Projects and Making Books Sing presented a concert reading of The Orphan Singer, a musical production, based on the book by award-winning author Emily Arnold McCully, and adapted for the stage by Making Books Sing’s Artistic Director Barbara Zinn Krieger. Commissioned by Making Books Sing, The Orphan Singer introduces young audiences to the life and work of Antonio Vivaldi.

The Orphan Singer tells the tale of an exceptionally gifted young girl named Caterina in 18 th century Venice, who is brought to an orphanage for young girls known for producing outstanding musicians, run by Maestro Antonio Vivaldi himself. A scheming prima donna, Apollonia, is determined to prevent Caterina from succeeding, as her beautiful voice captures the heart of Vivaldi. Will she overcome the jealousy of Apollonia? Who are the devoted street singers who visit the young girl and encourage her music education?

The Orphan Singer is the fourth FIRST CHANCE collaboration with Making Books Sing, following Beautiful Warrior, The Upside Down Boy, and A Band of Angels.
