Composers & the Voice

"I can think of no better forum for a composer with a passion for learning the traditions of so-called progressive American opera theater than AOP’s program."
-- Daron Hagen, composer/guest C&V instructor

Composers & the Voice 2007/08

American Opera Projects is proud to announce the fifth season of our Composers & the Voice Workshop Series. Once again we will select 6 composers to work with the company’s Resident Ensemble of Singers. The primary focus of the Composers & the Voice Series is to give composers extensive experience working collaboratively with singers on writing for the voice. Workshop sessions focusing on libretto development are also integrated into the season.  This series will include 11 workshop sessions between October, 2007 and May, 2008.

In an introductory session each of six singers (Coloratura Soprano, Lyric Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor, Baritone and Bass) will sing, and discuss details of their specific voice type. Over the subsequent working sessions each composer will write a short piece for each voice type and piano, which will be rehearsed, read, and discussed. The primary focus will be on how well suited the composition is to the voice, and clarity of text setting. AOP's Artistic Director Steven Osgood will lead the workshop series, consulting with the composers, and moderating the feedback sessions. These sessions will be closed to the public.

There will be two public performances as part of the Composers & the Voice Series. Each composer will have several solo works performed in May, 2008 at the end of the working sessions. Each composer will also write a 15-20 minute scene or extended work using up to three of the voice types and piano. The composers will have 3 months to complete these extended works. The 6 works will be rehearsed and presented by the Resident Ensemble on AOP's First Chance Series at the start of the 2008/09 season.

Workshop dates are 10/29, 11/19, 12/10, 1/7, 1/21, 2/11, 3/3, 3/17, 3/24, 4/15, and 5/5.
All workshop sessions will be 7:00 – 10:00 pm.
All sessions will be in New York City.
All composers must be present for all of the workshop sessions.

Application deadline: September 7, 2007.

There is a $40 application fee. There are no stipends available for selected composers.
